Roman thermal baths are scattered throughout half of Europe. Since I really wanted to have a building in the game that comes from the important Roman city “Are Flaviae”, I decided to rebuild the thermal baths. The remains can be found in the middle of the German Rottweil: [Google Map, click here].
As the thermal baths were rebuilt several times, I decided to use the non-symmetrical form of the 2nd stage.
Although I tried to be as detailed as possible, I adjusted some things. For example, the chimney on the front side did not exist and whether there really was an enclosure wall is unclear. Also the woodshed on the left side is a result of my imagination.
Another problem I already had with another thermal bath: You can’t immediately tell when playing that the building is a spa because the baths are inside the building (roofed). For this reason I added an outdoor pool to this thermal bath. So the player always knows immediately that this building is a bathhouse.
As a non-archaeologist I do not know how common outdoor pools were. I have visited several thermal baths, but only the information board of the thermal bath in Avenches (Switzerland) describes that there was an outdoor pool. So I think such added outdoor pools are a legitimate solution to make playing easier for the player.
IS A VISIT WORTH IT?
Whether you are interested in the Romans or not, Rottweil has a breathtaking and absolutely worth seeing old town. You fall in love at first sight with the beautiful houses. I have already been to Rottweil twice to visit the museum, but unfortunately both times without success. Both times I missed the opening hours of the museum because I stayed longer than planned at other excavation sites. Therefore I can say nothing about the museums. But why do Roman museums always close so early though? Who actually has time during the day to go to a museum?!?
But a visit to the thermal baths is still worthwhile. You can see the complete floor plan and some interesting information boards. Nearby there is a Roman estate, but I have never visited it before because it was already dark when I arrived. Location of the estate [Google Map, click here].
Summary: Rottweil is definitely worth a visit!
