Somewhat hidden in the forest near Oberlunkhofen (Aargau/Switzerland) lies half of a Villa Rustica building [Google Maps Link].
In the forest itself, the search for the villa is rather difficult. There is only one sign saying “Roman villa” to show the way. The remains of the walls are fenced off. However, you can walk around the fence and have a good look at everything.
A bit bizarre is the round cone, which is quite visible:
On the visualization on-site, you can find a sketch that shows that this was a cone that had supported the building. I have used this cone one-to-one in the game.
You can also see a small hypocaust, part of a wall heating system, and a few walls. Essentially, you can only see the right part of the building (bathroom wing). The rest is under the forest floor. According to the information board, there would probably still be outbuildings under the forest floor, but they have not been explored.
IS IT WORTH A VISIT?
Since you cannot enter the complex, a visit is only worthwhile for people who are really interested. The ruin is not easy to find, as the signposting is poor. Nevertheless, it is exciting to know what a medium-sized estate looked like. Besides, the forest is very special because of the many streams. I don’t know where parking is possible. I visited the ruin by bicycle.
