On a (unfortunately) rainy day in the summer of 2020, I went on a tour in the northern surroundings of Ulm (Germany). I also visited the Limes Museum Alen that day but put the report in a separate post.
In the area around Rainau (Germany) you can visit several Roman excavations. Due to lack of time, I only visited two: The Limes gate and the Limes tower.
LIMES GATE
In the middle of a field in Rainau stands a strange glass box [Google Maps Link]. Inside are the wall remains of a Limes gate. Above it is a reconstruction of the gate. There are several boards with very interesting information about the Limes and this gate. I was lucky and met a very nice lady who “guards” at the exhibition. She explained a lot about this topic – thank you again!
IS IT WORTH A VISIT?
Yes, absolutely. There are many information boards on-site and you can visit many more Roman buildings in the area.

LIMES TOWER
A little outside the village, next to a forest, you will find a reconstructed Limes watchtower [Google Maps Link]. Unfortunately, I was there on a day when the tower was closed. Supposedly, however, you can visit the inside of the tower. The door on the ground floor did not exist at that time. Its purpose is to allow visitors to enter the interior of the tower.
Right next to the tower, in the forest, there is a part of a wall that symbolizes the Limes. An interesting feeling when you consider that on one side was the wild Germania Magna and on the other the developed Roman Empire. A small wall that separated two worlds.
IS IT WORTH A VISIT?
Yes, even though the tower may be closed, right next to it you can still find some wall remains that give you a great picture of the border fortifications of the time. But this is also worth a visit because you can combine it with other Roman excavations nearby.
