Speed Modelling

Hand sketch of a fantasy building

It’s Sunday afternoon. I’ve checked all the news on Instagram. Nothing new so far. Then suddenly I had an idea: I could create a story on Instagram in which users could follow live how I develop a building for the game. But so that it wouldn’t drag on forever, I set myself a tight timeline of exactly 3 hours, which is very sporty. Every 30 minutes there was an update in my story. I then recorded the whole thing so that a TimeLapse video will soon be available on YouTube.

It all started with a sketch. I wanted to create a building that could be built on the forum. In the city, there are themes like security, food, water, etc. Each theme has an administration building. If you build this, the respective theme will be improved. In this case, it will be the administration building for the water supply. When you build this building, the aqueducts are maintained more often, which improves the supply radius.

after 30 minutes

30 minutes after the start, everything still looks a bit sparse. That’s because I had to restart my computer. Somehow it had just become very slow.

I have shown the basic structures of the building with cubes. This way I can see if the proportions are right.

after 60 minutes

The two side arms of the building are standing now. Although I copied the left one to the right, I arranged the windows differently, that way it looks a bit more natural. I also moved the roof tile texture a little.

after 90 minutes

Now the main building and the stairs in front of it are created. The gates took a lot of time. You can’t see it so well, but each gate was modeled separately.

after 120 minutes

Slowly the power is fading. Modeling for 120 minutes under pressure and without a break is quite exhausting. But I wanted to keep to the 3-hour mark I had set myself. At first glance, it seems that not much has changed. But inserting windows is very time-consuming. Because for each building I model the windows anew because I don’t want to use standard windows. I hope that this will make the buildings look more natural.

after 150 minutes

The backside was still missing. I have designed a small inner courtyard. Now, as I’m writing this blog post, I notice that the backside doesn’t look so nice. So it will look a little different in the game.

The pressure rises. In the next 30 minutes, I have to export the building to the engine and texture it there. Many users have asked me what the black areas on the roofs represent. In this case, black equals transparency. We will see this in the next screenshot.

after 180 minutes

After three hours of work, the building is (almost) finished. Challenge passed! 🙂 That was real stress, but I wanted to be done in three hours. By “almost finished” I mean that I now have another 5-6 hours of work ahead of me. I have to decorate the building more beautifully, optimize it, and write the program code. And that is very time-consuming.

Nevertheless, I hope you like the building!
