Above the customs building in Bad Zurzach, which lies on the Swiss-German border, is the Bad Zurzach fort [Google Maps hier klicken].
Steeply up the hill, we go to look at the castle. This is a castle that was refortified after the fall of the Upper Germanic Limes in 259. Near the fort, there was a Roman bridge, which was secured by a bridgehead on the German side. The parts of the wall built against the Rhine probably fell into the river, as they no longer exist.
On site, I marvelled at some foundation walls of buildings, extremely thick walls of a fort and the outline of a round tower. But that was it already. According to the information board on the opposite hill, there are still remains of walls. Unfortunately, the search for it was in vain, as the remains could not be found.
On my journey to the fort, I unfortunately discovered nothing that I could incorporate into my game. Therefore this castle will not be buildable in the game.
IS IT WORTH A VISIT?
At first glance, this historical castle seems very impressive. But although the thick wall remains are impressive, I rather don’t recommend a visit. The information on the information board is very sparse, so that one does not learn much about the castle.
Nevertheless, I would like to emphasize the small park with the chapel, which is now in the fort. In summer, I could enjoy the peace and quiet and the beautiful panorama there.
I also found the inhabitants of Bad Zurzach to be extremely friendly and obliging. When I couldn’t find the fort due to a large construction site, everyone came to my aid in good humor.
