Doctors’ house

Haus des Medicus
House of the surgeon

It is a well-known fact that the Romans were masters in water supply. But it is less known that the Romans had medical knowledge which really amazes every modern man.

An excellent brochure for the Legionnaire’s Trail in Vindonissa can be found here [click here]. There were surgeons who treated bone fractures, dentists who even fitted bridges or implants or doctors who cured glaucoma.

HOUSE OF MEDICUS

The medical facilities in “Pax Augusta” will consist of two buildings. Of a hospital and this doctors’ house. After much research I decided to imitate the house of the surgeon from Pompeii (Casa del Chirurgo). Unfortunately I did not find much about the house. I took the ground plan from here: [U.S. National Library of Medicine]. Here I found a very bad sketch: [uni-leipzig.de]. Based on this sketch and the ground plan I reconstructed the house. The south-east facade (referring to the sketch) does not correspond to the one I took in my variant. I decided on a different variant, because the ground plan I had available did not match the one in the sketch.

Since I have never been to Pompeii, I cannot tell how close does my reconstruction come to the original. Therefore I will soon have to go to Pompeii to check this.

BENEFIT

The city’s healthcare system is designed to prevent outbreaks of diseases. Likewise, more wealthy residents demand such facilities to make them feel comfortable. So in the game, you should not skimp on doctor’s houses.
