Odeon

Römisches Odeon
Roman Odeon – A place to enjoy singing.

An odeon looks similar to a theater but is covered and usually smaller than a theater. It was used primarily for performances where the acoustics were a priority such as vocal recitals. Therefore, an odeon was often covered with a roof.

Back of the Odeon – mosaics and busts are placed on the facade to convince the visitor of the beauty of the building.

The Odeon, whether it was so or not is debatable, will be one of the entertainment options in the game, which is of importance to the upscale populace. Therefore, equites and senators will demand this kind of entertainment, but simple peregrini will not.

The Odeon was one of the first larger buildings I approached. It looks a bit drab. So I’m going to visually rework the building again and add decorative elements. After all, the upper class of your provincial nest should be able to look forward to upscale entertainment.

Research

I have never visited a real odeon. Compared to regular theater buildings, there aren’t many odeons either [Wikipedia-Liste click here]. Among other things, I based my research on a small booklet called “Roman Theater in the Province – Eine Einführung in das Theaterwesen im Imperium Romanum. Schriften des Limesmuseums Aalen Nr. 41.”[clicke here].

To reconstruct a building as accurately as possible, I followed the research paper “Virtual reconstruction of the historical acoustics of the Odeon of Pompeii” [hier klicken]. This document is most relevant to those readers who are interested in the acoustics of an odeon.

The playable building is, from the ground plan, a replica of the “Theatrum Tectum”, which can be visited in Pompeii. You can find the coordinates here [Google Map kclick here].
