Facelifting my buildings

Revised AVGVSTVS Temple from Pula (Croatia)

Since I’ve been working on the game for more than 2 years now, I’m learning more and more about modeling buildings. That’s why I always look at buildings I’ve made before and think to myself; hey, that doesn’t look so great. you could make that much nicer. The basic structure of the building is always given. A good example is the Augustus Temple from Pula. I rebuilt it exactly according to a sketch. The plans can be found here on Wikipedia [click here]. The original temple I designed looked like this:

First version of the temple

Rightfully, I was contacted by several knowledgeable people: “Hey your temple has a mistake, the architrave is missing”. I thought to myself at first; what the hell is an architrave? During my research I found out that the construction of temple roofs and columns was exactly regulated and not just a coincidence. This was new for me. Well, the architrave is a part between the columns and the actual roof. If you are interested in how such temples are constructed, check out this very informative video: [YouTube Video click here].

Architrave and fresco added.

The architrave is the three lower elements in the picture. The upper part is the fresco. I added this completely missing part.
Then another problem came up. Temples were much more colorful back then. Today we know only these brownish marble buildings without color. I thought that they looked like that back then, too. But research was able to generate a lot of new knowledge here. So today we even know what colors were used. I gave a 2D graphic artist (freelancer) the order to design a fresco. I added this fresco afterwards as well:

On several sketches I also saw that Corinthian columns were colored on top. A very nice reconstruction of a colored Corinthian column can be seen in the museum in Xanten. At the very top, just under the roof hangs this one.

Colored Corinthian column

I have no claim to absolute historical correctness with this game. For this I simply lack the knowledge and also the resources. I took the colors from a template, which was probably used at that time. The arrangement of the colors is however freely invented.

These small but important embellishments have led to the fact that I personally like the temple much better now:

left before, right new

I hope you like the new temple as much as I do. Write it in the comments or message me on Instagram or Facebook about how I could spruce up the temple a bit more. I look forward to your suggestions.
